Lapis Lazuli
Wisdom • Truth • Inner Vision
Description
Lapis Lazuli, with its deep celestial blue and golden flecks of Pyrite, has long been treasured as a stone that mirrors the vastness of the heavens. Its name originates from the Latin “lapis” meaning stone and the Persian “lāzaward” meaning sky or heavens. Ancient civilizations revered Lapis for its divine beauty, associating it with royalty, spiritual insight, and protection. It was once believed to counteract the wiles of the spirits of darkness and connect its wearer to the wisdom of the universe.
This metamorphic rock is primarily composed of Lazurite, combined with Calcite, Sodalite, and shimmering specks of Pyrite. High-quality Lapis is an intense royal blue with vibrant gold flecks, while lower grades appear lighter and may contain more visible white Calcite, sometimes referred to as “Denim Lapis.”
Lapis Lazuli has been mined for over 6,000 years, with the highest-quality deposits found in the Sar-e-Sang mines of Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush Mountains. Other significant sources include Chile, Russia, Canada, Burma, and the United States. Historically, it was ground into ultramarine pigment, one of the most valuable dyes, used to adorn sacred temples, manuscripts, and artworks throughout Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Renaissance period.
Healing Properties
Lapis Lazuli is a powerful crystal of wisdom, truth, and higher consciousness. It stimulates the higher mind and enhances intellectual abilities, making it an excellent companion for executives, journalists, psychologists, inventors, writers, historians, and researchers. It encourages critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity, while supporting a deeper desire for knowledge, understanding, and personal growth.
Emotionally, Lapis promotes honesty of the spirit and authentic self-expression, helping release suppressed emotions and dissolve inner blockages. Often called the “Stone of Truth,” it strengthens communication in both spoken and written form, making it ideal for deep conversations, negotiations, and creative pursuits. Lapis also fosters harmony within friendships, relationships, and family dynamics, making it especially supportive in homes with teenagers, autism, Asperger’s syndrome, or attention-deficit disorders, where it promotes calm and compassionate communication.
Spiritually, Lapis awakens inner vision and activates the Third Eye Chakra, enhancing intuition and connection to higher consciousness. It encourages self-awareness and acceptance, allowing you to confront hidden truths and embrace personal authenticity. Many believe Lapis carries the wisdom of ancient civilizations such as Atlantis, Egypt, Sumeria, and India, aiding in the recovery of forgotten knowledge through meditation and past-life exploration.
Lapis Lazuli also attracts success, recognition, and promotion in professional settings, making it a valuable talisman for those seeking growth in creative, academic, or performance-based careers. It encourages dignity, compassion, and integrity when interacting with others while providing greater awareness of one’s beliefs, motivations, and life purpose.
Physical Healing Benefits
Lapis Lazuli has long been associated with physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. It is believed to support the throat, larynx, and vocal cords, easing strain and improving vocal clarity while helping regulate the thyroid and endocrine system for better hormonal balance. It may assist in improving circulation, lowering blood pressure, and stabilising cardiac rhythm, while also reducing vertigo, migraines, and inflammation. Traditionally, warm Lapis-infused water has been used to relieve eye infections and sties, while placing warmed Lapis on the skin is thought to reduce bruising, insect bites, and skin irritations. It can also help alleviate insomnia, support women with menstrual irregularities, cramps, and lower back pain, and ease nervous system imbalances. Additionally, Lapis is believed to benefit individuals managing ADD, ADHD, autism, and Asperger’s syndrome, making it a holistic aid for both mind and body.
