Black Tourmaline

Black Tourmaline is also known as Schorl, the best specimens come from Africa, Brazil and Pakistan. Tourmalines are aluminium borosilicate. It is hexagonal (trigonal) with prismatic crystals and striations running parallel to the main axis. No other gemstones have such a wide range of colours such as; red, pink, yellow, brown, black, green, blue and violet. Some even have colour variations within such as; watermelon tourmaline, which has a pink centre surrounded by green.

Heating, cooling and rubbing a Tourmaline crystal can create a piezoelectricity energy with a positive and negative charge at either end which can attract dust particles or small pieces of paper.
